An Excuse to Wear a Ballgown

Looking for an excuse to rent one of those insanely gorgeous gowns from Rent the Runway and wear it to a very fancy party? Same.

Not long after I started my career, I became involved with non-profit organizations. Suddenly, I received invitations to fundraising galas, many of which were black tie. I had a little sticker-shock at the price of these events, but many of the events have “young professional” ticket prices, and a portion of the ticket price is tax-deductible. I knew I wanted to support these organizations, but couldn’t be a big donor. I realized that these events are a great way to support causes without a huge donation.  In some instances, I also volunteered setting up the event.

Fundraisers pull the majority of their net profits from the presenting sponsors, advertisements and in-kind donations. So the organizers rely on ticket sales to make the event worthwhile and bring in community members to be exposed to the people who advertise. The point is, your presence goes a long way!

Once I decided on an event, I had to find a dress…Since my shopping budget was obsolete, I quickly found Rent the Runway and was able to rent designer gowns for a fraction of the retail cost. I also went to high-end thrift shops and found great options. A date was another issues…prior to being married, these events made for a fun girls-night or night out with friends as many have live bands, open bar and a delicious meal. I would highly encourage you to hop on the gala bandwagon. It is also a great place to network and meet community leaders if you’re a young professional!

Here in Jacksonville, we have an amazing social register through Circles magazine, which catalogues all of the big fundraisers happening locally. Jacksonville Magazine also publishes upcoming events. Every December, we attend The Women’s Board Art & Antiques Show benefitting Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Because my son spent the first 28 days of his life there, the hospital has a special place in my heart. You can find out more about that event here. Hope to see you there, in your formal wear!

ready to make it Rain{ka}?

I'm an award-winning, expert attorney in Jacksonville, Florida. I represent professional women and their families who are injured or arrested in Florida. I love my job and am proud to have a career, but when I became a mother, I learned that working moms are uniquely tasked with having to achieve "balance." (whatever that is.) What I really wanted was freedom - freedom to practice law in a way that works for me and my family. Through the support and advice of other working moms, I have found success by developing a personal brand that allows me to create my own clients and practice law in a way that gives me freedom. Now it's my turn to help other lawyer moms learn how to do the same and make it Rain(ka).
