A few years ago, I purged my closet. I kept only clothes that I loved – they fit, they laid well, they were in good shape, and stylist. I donated or consigned almost everything else. I made a deal with myself that anything that I was on the fence about, I could keep in a special place and if I didn’t wear it for one year, I had to donate or consign. The result was a pretty monochromatic closet with pops of bright color thanks to my Lilly Pulitzer obsession. So when my son was born, I pulled a few of these go-to pieces that turned into somewhat of a uniform. Especially with a crazy toddler running circles around me, it’s not bad to have a reliable (but limited) selection to quickly grab so that I can get out of the house and enjoy my family time.
The outfit is pretty simple: Black leggings, a grey, dove or white shirt, a light jacket or sweater whenever it’s chilly, sneakers and a hat when I don’t want to wash my hair. There’s no fuss. Of course, I have a whole closet full of other colors (like beige) for date night, but having a “uniform” that is still kind of cute saves me from straight-up t-shirts and gym shorts all weekend long.
