Every year, May 1 marks a really meaningful occasion for me as a legal professional. It’s Law Day, a time set aside to celebrate the rule of law and reflect on how justice weaves through the fabric of our society. For me, it’s more than just attending events or mingling with colleagues; it’s a day to pause and think about why I do what I do. If you’ve ever wondered what Law Day looks like through my eyes, here’s a peek into how I spend it and what it means to me.
Kicking Off with Inspiration
The morning of Law Day always feels a little different – like it’s buzzing with a sense of purpose. This year, I’ll head to the Jacksonville Bar Association’s Law Day Luncheon, an event I look forward to as both a professional and someone who’s passionate about our Constitution and its promises.
The theme this year is “The Constitution’s Promise: Out of Many, One,” and it got me thinking about how our nation has evolved over time. The idea of finding unity in diversity isn’t just some lofty ideal; it’s a principle we’re constantly working toward in the legal profession.
The keynote speaker, Roman Martinez, adds an extra layer of excitement to the luncheon. He’s argued cases in front of the Supreme Court – which even among lawyers is a very big deal. The conversations at this event always energize me, and I leave with new perspectives on what I can do in my work to uphold these values.
Reflecting on the Theme
The theme of “Out of Many, One” feels especially relevant right now. It reminds me that our shared commitment to inclusivity and equality is what helps hold this country together, even when things feel divided. Law Day, for me, is a chance to evaluate how my work impacts the bigger picture. Whether it’s advocating for clients or volunteering for causes that support access to justice, I see my role as one little piece of a much larger puzzle.
An Evening to Celebrate and Give Back
After the luncheon, I usually take some time in the afternoon to catch up on work or even squeeze in a little reflection (with, maybe, a latte in hand). But by early evening, it’s time to celebrate!
This year, I’ll be heading to the Edwards & Ragatz Law Day Gala, which benefits Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA). If you haven’t been, imagine a gorgeous evening at the Epping Forest Yacht Club, with everyone decked out in Kentucky Derby-inspired attire. Over the years, this event has turned into a tradition I genuinely look forward to.
There’s something about the combination of big hats, seersucker suits, and bourbon that just makes the evening so much fun. But the best part isn’t the cocktails or the live music (though, trust me, The RiverTown Band always kills it). The real highlight is knowing that every dollar raised is helping JALA provide critical legal assistance to people in need. Last year, the gala raised $25,000, which is huge. It’s a reminder that our profession isn’t just about interpreting laws; it’s also about taking action to make justice accessible to everyone.
What Law Day Means to Me
By the time I hang up my Derby hat at the end of the day, I always feel this overwhelming gratitude. Law Day is so much more than a lineup of events; it’s a reminder of why I chose this path and why it matters. It’s about honoring the ideals of fairness and unity that our legal system aspires to uphold.
For me, it’s a little like hitting the reset button – stepping back to reflect, reconnect, and remember that the work we do, day in and day out, has a bigger purpose. And whether I’m sitting in a ballroom listening to a Supreme Court advocate, or cheering with friends at the gala while raising funds for JALA, I feel this deep connection to the legal community and the values we share.
If you haven’t celebrated Law Day before, I encourage you to think about what justice and the rule of law mean to you. Maybe it’s as simple as reading up on the Constitution, or maybe you’ll find an event near you to check out. Either way, I believe there’s something in this day for everyone.
For me, it’s a reminder of the power of that old phrase, E Pluribus Unum. Out of many, we’re one. Today and every day, I’m proud to be a part of that.
